Our very deepest sympathy to you Nan, and to all your family
While we have only known Mike for about eight years we have enjoyed and admired his warm and dynamic personality, both as a friend and Dargaville Rotarian. We will very much miss his company.
Our apologies that today’s severe weather forecast has prevented us attending his commemoration to extend our regards in person.

MIKE GARDNER
When one of your hero’s passes away you stay up long hours and look for photos to remind you of all the fabulous memories of your hero. On March 30, 2026 my precious larger than life cousin, Mike Gardner, passed away peacefully with many of his precious beloved family by his side. He leaves behind his faithful wife Nan, beautiful daughters, Jessica and Georgia, his 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, all the light of his life.

Mike was also immensely loved by his BC Canadian family where he grew up. When my father Willard died of a work accident at age 34, Mike stepped in with his parents Aunt Lenny and Uncle Sam along with cousin Larry Paige to be near my mum and 7 children. They moved onto our street in south Vancouver and provided huge support to make sure we were going to be ok and they kept us in stitches for years with their crazy funny antics. Christmas times were unrivaled for hilarious fun and laughter. I could write a book about those memories indelible in our hearts and minds.

Cousin Mike found the love of his life in Nan and after marriage decided to move back to Nan’s home country of New Zealand where Nan encouraged him to get his teaching degree. Mike taught for years and ended up being the headmaster of West Harbour School in Auckland. He was highly regarded and loved by all his students and staff as he was always so much fun in everything he did.

Years later my personal family, husband and our two children, moved to NZ for five years where we were greeted with open arms by Mike and his precious family. Our Christmases with him and his family brought me back to my childhood memories of the fun and laughter we so enjoyed growing up. That’s when I learned that my father Willard had taken Mike under his wings when Mike was a child. In like fashion Mike took my family under his wings when my father died. Interestingly my father died on April 7, 1962 and Mikes celebration of life will be on April 7, 2026.

Today I celebrated my cousin’s favourite Canadian treat with a White Spot triple O burger.

Mike’s larger than life personality, zeal for life, laughter and love for so many will always be remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

To our NZ family, our hearts, love and prayers go out to you as you navigate this sorrowful time. Please know that we are with you in spirit while we watch the celebration from11,000 kilometers away.

Hugs and love
Elaine, Ian and family

Rest in peace my beloved cousin…

Dear Nan and Family
We were so sorry to hear the news of Mike's passing. Those of us still at West Harbour School have many fond memories of Mike and his antics (especially his dancing in the assemblies) and his obvious love for his family and grandchildren, whom he often spoke about. He will be missed by those fortunate enough to have known him. Our deepest condolences to you all at this time.

Such wonderful memories of times shared when Nan and Mike lived in one of the KDEC houses- he was the bright light at our dinner parties always making sure everyone had a great time. Thank you Nan for sharing him with us and the wonderful meals we enjoyed together. Blessings to you and all the family xx Kahn

Mike, lived a life overflowing with laughter, adventure, and deep family connection. Growing up in British Columbia, he was surrounded by a large, lively family who adored him. Mike was the kind of person who lit up gatherings, his energy, humour, and easy warmth made him unforgettable. Some of the best memories come from the chaos and joy on 46th Avenue, where cousins, siblings, and Aunt Lenny all lived just steps apart. Holidays were legendary: it took only one mischievous spark, someone grabbing a can of fake snow, a handful of flour, or even an egg from the fridge, before the entire house erupted into playful mayhem. Mike, Larry, and Aunt Lenny were always at the centre of it, laughing until their sides hurt, filling our home with the kind of joy that becomes family lore.
Mike carried that same spirit of connection throughout his life. One of his most cherished memories was the time he spent with my dad Will, who took young Mike to the racetrack, moments I know stayed with him long after Will’s passing. In 1970, Mike followed his heart across the world, moving to New Zealand after marrying Nan, the love of his life. Together they built a beautiful life rooted in love, friendship, and community. Though far from BC, Mike never lost his deep affection for his Canadian family, and he remained closely tied to the people and memories that shaped him. His stories, his laughter, and his generous heart bridged every mile.
Mike’s life was rich, full, and deeply felt. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, connection, and the kind of memories that continue to bring smiles even through tears. His Celebration of Life on April 7th will honor not only the man he became in New Zealand, but also the vibrant, beloved cousin, son, and friend he always was. Love his Canadian cousin Carol and Robert
