A Tribute to Bruce King
Bruce came into my life as a young teenager at the Norfolk Island Country Music
Festival in 1992, and over the years he became one of my heroes - not just as a
musician, but as a man.
He was one of the most generous people I've ever known. Whether it was repairing my
old drum kit, making or sourcing the parts I needed, welcoming me into his and Verna's
home while I was a university student in Auckland, sharing his incredible knowledge, or
simply giving his time, Bruce always gave without expecting anything in return.
Even in his seventies he continued to surprise me - hauling multiple drum kits up flights
of stairs for drum events, or quietly standing beside me through some of my life's more
difficult twists and turns. Whatever the task, Bruce simply got on with it, always with
kindness, humility and good humour.
We shared a deep passion for drums, and whenever I came across an old drum or
something unusual, Bruce was always my first call. Within moments you'd know where it
came from, who built it, whether it was original, what it was worth - and exactly what he
thought of it. His knowledge was extraordinary, but he never kept it to himself. He was
always willing to teach, encourage and help.
To me, Bruce was the finest drummer and drum technician I have ever known, but more
importantly, he was the finest gentleman I have ever had the privilege to call my friend.
Most years I'd only see Bruce once. It didn't matter if there were hundreds of people in
the room - before long he'd zero in on you from across the room, make a beeline over,
and want the latest update. More importantly, he'd want the details.
What I'll remember most is not just his remarkable skill, but the way he carried himself -
with humility, kindness, patience and genuine joy. He showed me that true greatness
isn't measured by talent and professionalism alone, but by the way we treat
people. Bruce carried himself with a quiet professionalism that inspired me to be better.
He never gave praise lightly, so the moments when he acknowledged something I'd
done will remain among the proudest of my musical life.
Bruce left an immeasurable mark on my life, and I know I won't be the only one who can
say that.
I will be forever grateful for his time, his knowledge, his encouragement and, above all,
his friendship. As a young drummer, and later as a grown man, I was one of the many
people fortunate enough to receive those gifts.
Thank you, Bruce, for your friendship, your generosity, and for quietly showing so many
of us what it means to live with grace.
My deepest condolences to Verna, Paul, Bret, Martin and the entire King family. Thank
you for sharing Bruce with all of us.
